The studio consists of a full glass blowing capacity where the public can view the glass blowing process. As glass requirements are so specific to each glassworker the kilns and other furniture are made to suit the glass blower. Therefore all of the kilns and furnaces have been made by Lynden Over in order to suit his own requirements. The furnace at Lava Glass has a capacity to hold 90 litres of molten glass. Lynden batches once a week to top up the glass supply. The pre cooked glass is melted down over a period of 5 -6 hours then held at 1300 o for 13 hours in order for the melt to become the pure and clean body necessary for a good batch of glass. The furnace stays at a temperature of 1060oC all year round. It is never turned off unless maintenance is required on the pot (tank of glass). At Lava Glass the equipment is run by bottled LPG. Lynden uses 10x 45kg cylinders of LPG per week. Adjoining the studio is an extensive gallery of hand-blown art glass and jewellery where you can browse and buy part of the Lynden Over collection. Other collections by local glass blower Chris Jones are also available for sale or for viewing in the Gallery. In 2007 Lava Glass opened the doors to a brand new Café offering another dimension to the Lava Glass destination. Enjoy a coffee and a selection of cabinet foods or choose from our delicious menu. Dine inside or outside on the sunny patio with fresh rural surrounds. The café is also available for functions with catering available – a unique venue where you can socialize amongst the glass art in the Gallery. Lava Glass, Taupo are also currently working on a fun Children’s Play Area and a Garden Walk to add to the Lava Glass experience. |
