| WATCH GLASS BLOWING | |||||||
|
The Glass Blowing Studio consists of a full glass blowing capacity where the public can view the glass blowing process by Glass Artist Lynden Over. His extensive training in glass blowing, jewellery making and sculpture brings a unique quality and form to his work. As glass requirements are so specific to each glass worker, the kilns and other furniture are especially made to suit the individual glass blower. Therefore all of the kilns and furnaces have been made by Lynden Over in order to suit his personal requirements. Glass Blowing is a facinating process and seeing the artist at work is not an everyday experience. The furnace at Lava Glass has a capacity to hold 90 litres of molten glass. Lynden batches once a week to top up the glass supply. The pre cooked glass is melted down over a period of 5 -6 hours then held at 1300 degrees Celsius for 13 hours in order for the melt to become the pure and clean body, which is necessary for a good batch of glass. The furnace stays at a temperature of 1060 degrees Celcius all year round. It is never turned off unless maintenance on the pot (tank of glass) is required. Adjoining the studio is an extensive gallery of hand-blown art glass and jewellery where you can browse and buy part of the Lynden Over collection. Collections by local glass blower Chris Jones are also available for sale or viewing in the Gallery. We look forward to welcoming you here at Lava Glass. |
